Senior Nurse (Permanent)

Position: Senior Nurse
Location: Coquet Vets, Amble, Northumberland
Role Overview:
- Full time / 40 hours per week
- Permanent
- 25 days holiday, plus 8 bank holidays (based on 8 hour days / 264 hours)


This role carries significant responsibility, and you will be required to work closely with the Head Nurse and Coquet Vets (CV) partners in the management of the nursing team as well as some additional roles in regard to the business.

It is a full-time role. If you are an internal candidate but are currently not a full-time employee, we are open to a discussion regarding increasing your hours to full-time to enable you to apply. We are also open to discussing offering the role as part of a suitable job share to both external or internal candidates.

Role Description / Typical Responsibilities

This is not an exhaustive list of tasks, and the post holder may be asked to undertake any other reasonable duties in connection with their post.

N.B.: Most responsibilities are to assist/support the Head Nurse however, it may be that this takes the form of the head nurse allocating and delegating some of these tasks solely to the senior nurse. CV partners oversee ensuring that where this is the case, the delegation is appropriately and fairly done.

  • To stand in whenever possible for the Head Nurse when they are unavailable in the short term, e.g., for holiday and short-term sickness cover.

  • To accept the delegation and take on any responsibilities deemed appropriate and suitable by the Head Nurse. This role will report directly to the Head Nurse.

  • To assist the Head Nurse with the allocation of duties on a daily basis for all nursing staff and to ensure they have the correct training for these duties.

  • To assist the Veterinary Surgeons with surgery and clinics for inpatients and outpatient animals and carry out clinical nursing duties as required.

  • To help the Head Nurse to ensure good communications between all departments.

  • To assist the Head Nurse to organise nurse and ACA rotas.

  • To assist the Head Nurse to allocate areas of responsibility to all nurses and to ensure that these are carried out fully and that all records are kept up to date.

  • To work alongside the Head Nurse and the CV partners to ensure all new staff members receive a full induction and successful completion of the induction handbook in a timely fashion.

  • To assist the Head Nurse in overseeing the dispensary, stock control, and ordering

  • To assist the Head Nurse and the CV partners in managing the maintenance of the building where required

  • To help the Head Nurse to oversee the maintenance of the lab equipment

  • To assist CV partners with the managing, promoting, and running of Northern CPD

  • To assist the Head Nurse to update and distribute all clinical risk assessments and to add any new risk assessments needed

  • To work with CV partners to keep the PMS up to date and keep prices accurate

  • To act as a clinical coach for any students and apprentices as needed

  • To provide support in arranging holiday cover as needed with this nurse and ACA team

  • To ensure one's own knowledge and skills are kept up to date and CPD requirements are fulfilled, including advising CV partners of any gaps in knowledge and identifying any training need.

  • To help to support all work experience placements

  • To be responsible for one's own health and safety and that of others in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1975 and ensure compliance with any instruction relating to Health and Safety. This includes involvement in fire safety within the practice.

Essential For This Role:

  • RVN qualification

  • Excellent organisational skills

  • Attention to detail

  • Forward and progressive attitude to nursing and the running of the business

  • Interest in team and people management

  • An interest in nurse recruitment and training

  • Good client relations skills

  • Good people management skills

  • The ability to follow instructions accurately

  • Outstanding nursing skills and the ability to lead by example in terms of all work but in particular clinical work

  • Good ICT Skills

Desirable for this role:

  • 3+ years of experience as an RVN

  • Full driving license

  • An interest in helping to provide staff and public training

  • First aid qualification

  • Fire marshal training

  • Prior experience in clinical coaching

Head Nurse (Maternity Cover)

Position: Senior Nurse
Location: Coquet Vets, Amble, Northumberland
Role Overview:
- Full time / 40 hours per week
- Fixed Term (Maternity Cover)
- 25 days holiday plus 8 bank holidays (based on 8 hour days / 264 hours)


This role carries significant responsibility, and you will be required to work closely with the clinical director(s) and Coquet Vets (CV) partners in the management of the nursing team as well as some additional roles in regards to the business. Working closely with vets within the team to ensure cohesion between vets and nurses and administration staff.

Role Description / Typical Responsibilities

This is not an exhaustive list of tasks, and the post holder may be asked to undertake any other reasonable duties in connection with their post.

N.B.: Some of these roles and responsibilities may be delegated in full to the Senior Nurse, but the Head Nurse will hold overall responsibility for the tasks. CV partners will oversee ensuring that where this is the case, the delegation is appropriately and fairly done.

  • To line manage and carry out annual appraisal of all nursing and ACA staff

  • To carry out return-to-work interviews where necessary for nursing and ACA staff

  • To take a lead on updating and distributing all clinical risk assessments and adding any new risk assessments needed

  • To work with CV partners to keep the PMS up to date and keep prices accurate

  • To take dual responsibility for any apprentice/trainee nurses at Coquet Vets (working with or acting as a clinical coach if needed)

  • To provide support in approving holidays and arranging cover with this nurse and the ACA team.

  • To ensure one's own knowledge and skills are kept up to date and CPD requirements are fulfilled, including advising CV partners of any gaps in knowledge and identifying any training need.
