Dental disease in dogs and cats is one of the most common conditions that veterinary surgeons see in everyday practice. It is estimated that between 60% and 80% of animals are affected by dental disease.
Gum inflammation, or gingivitis, is caused by the buildup of plaque on the teeth. This will lead to the buildup of tartar if not cleaned, and this can lead to further gum disease, causing discomfort to your pet.
As your pet chews, these inflamed gums can bleed, releasing bacteria and their toxins into your pet’s bloodstream, which makes your pet feel unwell. These toxins may in turn cause problems with other organs, such as the kidneys and heart.

We are very passionate about dental health. At every veterinary exam, we will check your pet’s mouth and recommend a dental plan for them. This could be brushing your pet’s teeth, a change in their diet, introducing dental toys or chews, or a dental procedure.
To celebrate Pet Dental Health Month, we are offering up to 15% off the full cost of a dental procedure over February. Find out more about this promotion here.
All our dental procedures include general anaesthetic, full mouth radiographs (x-rays), scale and polish, and extractions as needed. They go home with pain relief and are seen back for a check after 5-7 days.
The three things to look out for are how bad your pet’s mouth smells, whether they have a reduced appetite, and whether you have noticed any swelling, bleeding, or excess salivation.
Don’t forget that free dental checks with one of our vets or nurses is available to all Coquet Vets clients, so call us today on 01665 252 250 to get your pet's mouth checked.
